Fencing is very popular in Italy, and maybe that’s why Italians are always regarded as favourites at major international fencing events.
“A very interesting competition in a very significant age group, - characterized European Fencing U23 Championshis Giuseppe Gafiero, leader of team Italy, - Young fencers are no longer juniors, since they are on the way to the senior category. Such tournaments provide us with a good opportunity to test our near reserve”.

Hosts collected three more gold in team events n Day 4.
Fencers say, team events are very different from what they have in individual bouts. They differ in psychology and in spirit, and are characterized by a special team chemistry rarely seen in individual contests. “One for all, and all for the one”, - a famous musketeers’ slogan can illustrate the ground principle of the team fencing. It has very much to do with a relay. Three fencers, changing each other on the piste, are working non-stop 9 bouts 3 minutes each. Each fencer faces the other three fencers from the opposing team. The first team to score 45 points or who is leading after 9x3mins wins the match. The two fencers rotate after 5 points for one team (or after 3 mins), then 10 points (or 6mins) etc. There can be one minute extra-time. The fencer (or team) that score the first point wins the match. If there is still a tie after a one minute extra time, a draw determines the winner.
Competition Day 4 of the European Fencing U23 Championships in Kazan brought two gold medals to the team Russia, winning team competitions in men’s epee and in women’s sabre.

Yesterday we often heard participants tspeculating on how difficult for them it was to fence compatriots from the psychological viewpoint. The sport fortune seemed to have ignored their praying, and this day again it proceeded to set teammates at loggerheads in both weapons.
In women’s epee, Ewa Nelip from Poland took a good start in the prelims. On her way to the podium she snatched the wins over two Russians – Yana Zvereva (15:14) and Vlada Vlasova (15:13), and then outplayed her teammate Katarzyna Dabrowa (15:8), qualifying to the semi. Dagmar Baranikova from Slovakia did not manage to find an argument to stop her, loosing 6:15.
